LaGuardia Community College students and educators earned more Fulbright scholars in the 2019-2020 school year than any other two-year college in the country.

LaGuardia, located in Long Island City  was named the top producer of Fulbright scholars among all of the nation’s community colleges, and the only community college in New York City to have faculty members awarded Fulbright scholarships for 2019-2020.

The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by Sen. J. William Fulbright as a way of funding cultural and educational exchange between the U.S. and other countries. Students and educators can receive a Fulbright grant or scholarship to study, conduct research or teach abroad.

Among the recipients at LaGuardia are Professors Karen Miller and Robin Kietlinski, who study the Philippines and Japan, respectively.

More than 390,000 people have received grants or scholarships from the Fulbright Program since its inception.

“This acknowledgement that LaGuardia Community College is a top producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars within higher education at large, and the leading producer among associate degree awarding institutions nationwide, underscores the scholarly work that our community college faculty do, just as four-year college faculty do,” LaGuardia Community College Interim President Paul Arcario said in a statement.
